Iowa’s Brooke Axiotis Elected to NASBE Board of Directors
Alexandria, VA — Brooke Axiotis, a member of the Iowa State Board of Education, was appointed in January to NASBE’s board of directors as a new state board member representative.
Axiotis, who joined the Iowa State Board in 2014, will fill the vacancy made by Kansas State Board Member Jim McNiece, NASBE’s now president-elect.
A member of the Iowa State Bar, Axiotis has a background in civil rights law, and works for the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. Her community activities include the Junior League of Des Moines, Friends of Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, and Links, Inc. She earned her law degree from Drake University.
“We’re delighted Brooke will have a seat at the table on behalf of new state board members,” says NASBE President Mary Lord. “New members always bring a thoughtful, fresh perspective to NASBE’s board of directors, and their participation early on often sets the stage for bigger things: Many have gone on to chair their own state boards and serve key leadership roles at NASBE.”
“State boards of education bring together such diverse groups of people toward one goal: to ensure our state education systems provide a high-quality education to all students,” says Axiotis. “During my time teaching, I saw the impact a good education has on our future generations. I became a state board member to have a voice in education and I am excited to be a voice for new members on NASBE’s board of directors.”
