NASBE Names Francis Eberle as Deputy Executive Director
Arlington, VA – The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) is pleased to announce Francis Eberle has been named as the organization’s deputy executive director. Eberle is being promoted from within the organization, where he previously served as director of NASBE’s Next Generation Science Standards work.
“We are delighted that Francis Eberle will now be serving state board of education members in his new role as deputy executive director,” says Executive Director Kristen Amundson. “His leadership and professional expertise have already helped many state boards of education address issues ranging from science standards to school leadership. We are all looking forward to bringing his perspective to a wider portfolio of issues.”
Francis Eberle brings to NASBE a strong entrepreneurial track record and deep passion for state education reform. Eberle joined NASBE over a year ago to direct the organization’s Next Generation Science Standards project after previously leading two organizations—the National Science Teachers Association and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, both focused on advocating for quality science education. His leadership experience at these organizations quickly became an asset to NASBE, where he has worked internally with NASBE staff to build a strong portfolio of work across several disciplines, including science standards. He has been invaluable to numerous state boards of education across the country in understanding the content, process, and implications of state education policy through one-on-one consultations, facilitating state board retreats, and managing NASBE’s popular state stipend project. Eberle is an educator at heart. For 15 years, he was a middle school science teacher and is an adjunct professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Eberle is a graduate of Boston University and University of Connecticut, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in science education from Lesley University and attended Harvard Business School’s Executive Management Program for nonprofit management.
“Francis has proven his commitment to NASBE and state boards across the country over and over,” says NASBE Board President Jane Goff. “As state boards make more important and complex decisions about the future of education, Francis’s executive leadership and vast policy experience will be critical to their success.”
