NASBE Supports New Student Data Privacy Principles
Alexandria, VA – The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) has joined more than two dozen leading national education organizations in signing onto the Principles for Using and Safeguarding Students’ Personal Information. NASBE was part of a small working group led by the Data Quality Campaign (DQC) and Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) that informed and drafted the principles.
“Student data privacy is a key focus area for NASBE, and we are happy to join with DQC, CoSN and others in finding common ground to protect student data,” says NASBE Executive Director Kristen Amundson. “Almost half of the data privacy legislation introduced in state legislatures last year put state boards of education in charge of writing their state’s privacy rules or governing some aspect of student data privacy, so these principles couldn’t have come at a better time. They are a strong framework of best practices. NASBE looks forward to working with our data principle partners in providing resources and supporting efforts to make these principles a reality in all states.”
The principles are a landmark effort by major national education associations representing parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, state boards of education, chief technology officers and others to articulate commonly held principles that should guide the use and protection of student information. The student data principles are intended to articulate the education community’s core beliefs and demonstrate its commitment to building transparency and trust. They emphasize safeguarding data requires more than just compliance with the law; it requires building a culture of privacy at all levels.
