How We Can Help Your State

NASBE Workshop or Meeting in Your State

NASBE would be happy to support your state board of education’s work in this area. In visits to
your state by NASBE staff, we will discuss national trends in education data privacy legislation
and policy requirements; share some promising practices from across the country; learn the status
of your work in data privacy; and listen to your concerns and questions. These meetings can include
any stakeholders your board chooses, such as staff of your state education agency, legislators, and
other key parties, as well as SBE members. Please let us know if you would be
interested.

Conduct a Policy Audit of Your State’s Laws, Rules, and Policies

Utilizing “best practices” principles drawn from numerous organizations, NASBE can research and analyze your state’s laws and policies that influence education data privacy, and offer options as to how they could be improved.

Provide Consultation and Analysis on Current or Proposed Policy Language

If your state board of education, department of education, legislature, or other policymakers introduce a bill or policy, we are happy to analyze and explain the bill or policy “in plain English,” describe potential problems with language that could, for example, prevent a first grade teacher discussing a child with their former kindergarten teacher, or perform any other help requested.

Provide sample policies and common practices from states

We are working with national, state, and local partners to find and create sample policies and highlight best practices from around the country. NASBE will showcase these resources in our publications, and can also send out these stories and publications by request.

Provide a link to our partners

NASBE is part of several groups that are working on education data privacy from all angles. If you have a question or need anything that we cannot offer, we are happy to connect you to someone who can help.

If you have any questions or want help with something not listed here, please contact Amelia Vance, NASBE’s Director of Education Data & Technology at amelia.vance@nasbe.org.
