Recognizing the importance of out-of-school time in education, NASBE and The Wallace Foundation are partnering on the exploration of summer learning. NASBE’s work in this area will explore summer learning through the lens of state policy. NASBE has developed several resources for state board members to understand the issues surrounding out-of-school time and summer learning. Our latest resources include:
- Summer Learning Policy Update: This policy update highlights key information about summer learning, and what state board members should consider when adopting policies around the issue.
- Approaching a New Policy Issue: Case Studies in Summer Learning: This piece from our “Policymaking Perspectives” series highlights insights from a series of NASBE in-state workshops on summer learning. It offers early lessons-learned through the process of adopting policies aimed at summer learning.
- Discussion Guide on Summer Learning: A New Vision for Supporting Students in Summer Programs. This guide to summer learning describes major research findings about the impact of summer learning loss on students and looks at what is known about effective programs to combat it. Worksheets are included to help guide state board members on summer learning policy.
- This fall (2014), NASBE’s dedicates an issue of its award-winning State Education Standard journal to summer learning. Stay tuned!
In addition, The Wallace Foundation’s Knowledge Center provides a number of useful resources and research reports on summer learning. This is one of the first places to look for answers to some of the most challenging issues in summer learning.
