NGSS Webinars
Online Webinar #1: A Primer on Next Generation Science Standards and its Policy Considerations (3/28/2013)
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are expected to be released in coming weeks, but what do you know about them? This webinar will present an overview, including what they are, why they were developed, and how they were constructed. In addition, presenters will discuss policy implications as state boards consider adoption and implementation of the standards, and much more.
The presenters included:
- Stephen Pruitt. Achieve, Vice President, Content Research and Development
- Michael Gilligan. Achieve, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives
- Elizabeth Ross. AACTE, Manager of State Chapters
- Francis Eberle. NGSS Project Director, NASBE (Moderator)
Please find the presentation here.
Online Webinar #2: State to State: Deliberations about the Next Generation Science Standards (7/18/2013)
The Next Generation Science Standards are the latest set of common standards states can consider for adoption. With 26 states playing an active role in the writing of these standards, they and others will or may discuss whether to adopt them. Their discussions related to quality and purposes of these new science standards are important, but it is also it is critical for them to dig into the policy implications of these new science standards.
The presenters included:
- Brigitte Blom-Ramsey. Kentucky State Board of Education
- Felecia Smith. Associate Commissioner, Office of Next Generation Learners, Kentucky Department of Education
- Artemio Paz, Jr.. Oregon State Board of Education
- Cheryl Kleckner. Education Specialist for CCSS and Science, Oregon Department of Education
- Francis Eberle. NGSS Director, NASBE (Moderator)
Please find the presentation here.
Online Seminar #3: States Working Together on Professional Development for Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (12/19/2013)
Participants in the NGSS Regional Conference identified professional development as one of their top priorities as they think about or have adopted the NGSS. This webinar was designed to meet that need by including presenters that are involved in professional development around the NGSS.
The presenters included:
- Peter McLaren. Science and Technology Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education
- Brian Reise. Professor of Learning Sciences, Northwestern University
- Francis Eberle. NGSS Director, NASBE (Moderator)
Two handouts were provided as additional reference to this webinar. This document describes the type of professional development that is needed for the implementation of the NGSS: NASBE Reiser 2013. It is published by the K-12 Center at ETS and can also be found on their web site.
Also a handout that had a list of future support for the NGSS was distributed at the Achieve Annual Conference in December, 2013. It can be seen by clicking here. Achieve NGSS Handout

Online Webinar #4: Designing and Aligning Assessments for Next Generation Science Standards (7/15/2014)
The National Research Council released a report called Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards that outlines an approach to developing science assessments that align to the vision of standards such as Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Developing such assessments comes at a critical time — state policymakers are increasingly focused on finding more effective measures of student learning, particularly for learning in science, to help determine the college, career, and civic readiness of students. NASBE held this webinar on July 15, 2014, invited the Learning Science Research Institute’s Jim Pellegrino to explore ways to develop and implement a system of assessments designed to support teachers’ instruction, monitor learning on a broad scale, and identify ways students can learn science. This webinar was suitable for any policymaker or educator who wants to better understand new ways of gauging student learning.

Online Webinar #5: Communicating about New Science Standards (11/17/2014)
Providing clear, accurate, targeted, and timely information has always been a challenge for state board members. With social media, blogs, and a 24-hour news cycle, communications today is even harder to manage. Adopting and implementing new science standards will make news, particularly if those standards set more rigorous expectations, as do the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This presents state policymakers with challenges but also with new opportunities to inform and engage stakeholders on a complex set of issues.
NASBE hosted this webinar to help state board members build strategies for developing and executing a comprehensive communications plan to strengthen public awareness and support. It will cover what elements should be included in state boards or state agency communications plans and what state board members can do themselves. We discussed the implications for the work of state boards and provide examples from states.
Moderated by Dr. Francis Eberle, Deputy Director, NASBE, presenters include Jessica Vavrus, Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, WA; Dr. Ellen Ebert, Science Director, Teaching and Learning, Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, WA; and Patricia A. Maunsell, Communication Consultant, Widmeyer Communications.
