- State Innovation: “A Goal Without a Plan Is Just a Wish”: The Maryland State Board of Education’s Path after the Adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards
A new issue of NASBE’s State Innovations looks at how Maryland has developed a plan for thoughtfully implementing the Next Generation Science Standards. As an early adopter, Maryland’s story illustrates the state board’s willingness to commit to action by their adoption yet remaining deliberative so they provide enough time to be open to course corrections as they begin their implementation process.
NASBE Commentaries about the NGSS
Commentary #1: Why My State Adopted the Next Generation Science Standards, by Randy Dorn Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction
In this commentary, Washington State Superintendent Randy Dorn describes why his state decided to adopt NGSS: “We did it because the standards will help students become literate in science” he says, “because the standards are mindful of student diversity and equity, because the standards are cross-disciplinary…[a]nd because it’s right for our students.”
The NGSS Communication Workbook
The Next Generation Science Standards have generated a lot of questions from members, media, parents, business leaders and the education community as a whole. A series of training videos has been created by NASBE to help board members develop communication skills to successfully address your constituents’ questions. The series consists of four videos that are about ten minutes in length and a post-video Workbook for you to log your notes for future reference. The units are: The Communications Process – gain a better understanding of the communications process; Core Concepts of Communication – learn how body language, voice tone, and writing style can impact your message; Understanding Your Audience – learn tips to evaluate your audience, determine the best way to communicate, and find common ground to effectively communicate your message; Developing and Delivering Your Message – learn how to determine the objective of your message, persuade, determine outcomes, and overcome messaging challenges.
The Guide to the NGSS
The layout of the NGSS is different from past standards. The Guide to the NGSS guides a state board member through the architecture of the NGSS, with examples and some videos of what teaching might look like if the NGSS was implemented.
